May the 4th be with you!

Some time ago one of the photographers I follow, Oz Saiki posted a few photos of models wearing Star Wars droid bathing suits or bikinis with matching Star Wars character helmets (Vader, StormTrooper, Boba Fett). Seeing this inspired me to organize a Star Wars themed shoot, allowing the combination of two things that I love (Star Wars and photography!).

I had no doubt the makeup artist for this would have to be Anni, one of the biggest Star Wars fan I know.

Planning started early December 2016 and I asked my friend Morgan to be my assistant and then booked Warehouse Studios for early February.

The idea for the final images was to have the models composited into Star Wars planet backdrops and no one better to create them then our Darth Vader, Carol Larsen.

Anni lined up other creatives to help her out: Jaymee-Beau Potter for hair and Tennielle Copson to assist with the makeup.

‘I have a bad feeling about this’ – Challenges along the way

As can be expected with a project involving this many people and with as much forward planning, a few changes to model casting had to be made along the way.

Our original Vader and R2D2 were concerned that with the amount of lead time that they may have had other commitments come up and responsibly decided to opt out of the shoot very early into planning. We also had a no show on the day but versatile and talented Ally J Wilkinson ended up taking the roles of two characters.

Despite the recent surge in popularity of Star Wars, a few of the costumes proved a little more challenging to source than was originally expected. One bathing suit had to be ordered in all the way from the UK with another coming from China.

Makeup & Hair

Here’s the amazing work they created for the shoot.

The Empire strikes

I’ve been following Carol’s work since I started shooting and we had the chance to work together before. She’s a very multi-talented lady and was the perfect choice to be our Darth Vader.

Carol is also responsible for the amazing composites you will see at the end of this story!

I have shot with Ally more times than I can count. We became very good friends and she’s as talented as she is sweet (and hot)!

You will see her here as our StormTrooper AND C3PO!

The Droids you’ve been looking for

And to play R2 I was looking for a short ish model with red hair. Kiara was the only model in the shoot I haven’t met before but I knew she was the right fit. Our online communication from the moment I approached her to the day of the shoot was great and she nailed the shoot!

Final Images

So after 5 hours in the studio was time for downloading, culling, proofing and retouching before sending the images for Carol to do her magic.

Having her on board was winning twice, as you can see!

Bonus

We still had a little time before leaving the studio so we created another look for our Vader Carol, just as a bonus!
